Why we destroy the world?

Cover Why we destroy the world?

When clients come to me for counseling, they often deal with others behaving selfishly. I suggest imagining these people as three-year-old children. We know toddlers seek constant attention and ignore others‘ needs because they fear being overlooked and powerless. This childish behavior would be normal if they were three. We recognize childish narcissism in others but struggle with our own. We crave recognition, feel hurt when overlooked, and envy those with more success. Narcissism isn’t just for disturbed individuals; it affects all our emotions and actions, driving us forward. We display mature or immature narcissistic behaviors in relationships, conflicts, and self-image. Our search for recognition can be through status symbols or a balanced life. We can mature and change throughout life, recognizing and overcoming immature behaviors with age. Capitalist culture hinders self-maturation by promoting false promises of extraordinary lives. Algorithms and economic interests manipulate our desires, selling us things for admiration and happiness. The economy and politics don’t support our growth.

Believing in limitless self-realization, we contribute to environmental destruction and injustice. Admitting our everyday narcissism and observing our behavior is the foundation for a new view of life. Recognizing our culture’s narcissistic scuffles as immature behavior helps us grow.
